A "splendid square" in Arnhem
We have the so-called "splendid neighbourhoods", but also "splendid squares" do exist. The Gele Rijdersplein is a square that citizens of Arnhem have an ambivalent relationship with; it's ugly and still they love to be there, junkies are wandering around and yet it's a nice place to sit.
All "species" of Arnhem do relax over there, from one moment to the other they all "appear". From tough youngsters to fragile elder people, the first question whether the others might be scared away by them. The others think they are pinching junkies. Both are happy to be there!
The Gele Rijdersplein (Yellow Rider Square) has contemporary users while at the same time it looks like an anachronism.
I asked all for permission to portrait them and noted down what they think of the square, and whether they like to be there. Photos are taken early spring; a wonderful summer on the square is in the air.
